TAMPA, Florida Although it hasn’t been decided yet, it appears that the Detroit Lions will likely start their hot rookie tight end on Sunday against the Buccaneers.
Before the game at Raymond James Stadium begins, Sam LaPorta is anticipated to test his injured calf during a workout, according to ESPN. He will be able to play against the Buccaneers as long as the medical staff is satisfied with what they find.
But, a source told ESPN, “it is trending in the right direction.”
LaPorta, who was selected in the second round of this year’s draft, is having a great first month in Detroit. Prior to Week 6, he not only had the most catches among rookie tight ends (25), but also the most yards among tight ends (289). In addition, he has caught three touchdown passes, including two in last week’s demolition of Carolina. Furthermore, he is playing a position that is notoriously challenging for rookies.
Earlier this week, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson stated, “I’m trying to see what he can’t do right now. Because of how well he has handled everything, in fact. He did a fantastic job. He is skilled. He’s a pro even as a beginner. Every time his name is mentioned, I give Steve Heiden, his position coach, credit. He’s done an amazing job of preparing him week in and week out. Sam is also really talented. In this league, especially at that position, you tend to see a lot of young players who are either excellent pass catchers or who are more adept at blocking, but he is equally skilled in all areas.

It is quite disappointing to see Knight and Moseley placed on injured reserve. After sitting out the first four games while he continued his injury recovery, Moseley made his debut in Week 5 against the Panthers. Moseley was brought in during the offseason to strengthen the Lions’ secondary. Sadly, Moseley was hurt on his second play of the year, and he is now on injured reserve.
As they get ready to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Detroit Lions are strategically changing their roster in an effort to improve their record to 5-1. It is a disadvantage for the Lions when important players are put on injured reserve, like Emmanuel Moseley, especially given his importance in strengthening the secondary.
When the Detroit Lions take on the 3-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in less than a day, they will try to improve to 5-1 on the year. The Lions made a number of roster changes on Saturday, including the addition of two players to the injured reserve list.
