Jordan Willis, a former Sunderland captain, has signed for League One club Northampton Town and can’t wait to get started.
The 29-year-old sustained a torn patella tendon while playing for Sunderland against Shrewsbury Town in February 2021, and an initial procedure resulted in further difficulties that prolonged his spell on the sidelines.
While the Black Cats extended his contract by a year to allow him to heal, he departed the club early this year to join Wycombe Wanderers. Willis, who left the Chairboys in the summer, has already joined Northampton and is working on fitness with his new teammates.
Willis is no stranger to Town’s Sixfields Stadium, having played there when Coventry City called it home in the 2013-14 season, and he has reconnected with old Sunderland teammate Lee Burge.
“I’ve already been here for a while and it’s going well,” he told reporters. “It’s been great to get some training in and meet with the lads.” They seem like a terrific group, and now that I’ve signed a contract, I can’t wait to get started.
“You can tell the club is in good shape after just one week of training.” You can see the calibre of the team, and I aim to contribute to it and help the club improve.
“I know a few of the boys. I worked with Lee Burge at Sunderland and Coventry, and I also played alongside Ryan Haynes at Coventry. We all passed through Coventry at the same time, so it’s been great to meet them again.
“I started at Coventry as a 17-year-old and stayed there until I was about 24 before moving on to Sunderland for two seasons.”
“After joining in January, I had a good six months at Wycombe last season.” I got in a couple games, and now I’m feeling fit and healthy, and I’m ready to hit the ground running.”
