Alex McLeish thinks Philippe Clement would be a fine manager for Rangers, but he also suggested that the team might need to spend more money on signing new players.
To replace Michael Beale at Ibrox, Clement has reportedly been offered a four-year contract by the Arabic publication Al-Riyadiah on Tuesday (10 October). There are significant indications that Al-Shabab of Saudi Arabia is also interested in signing Clement.
McLeish, who met Clement when serving as a coach in Belgium, believes the 49-year-old will succeed in Glasgow.
“Do Rangers need to dig through their wallet once more to find extra money for other players? If Philippe is the visitor, I suppose he’ll have some ideas about bringing in specific players as well.
Utilize what he has
The Rangers will undoubtedly be hoping that Clement will be able to make more of the various summer newcomers that Beale brought in, as many of them simply haven’t really gotten going yet.
The Gers paid out an estimated £13 million on new hires in the summer to make up for the significant number of departures from the previous campaign, though Beale insisted that figure was “miles out.”
It goes without saying that any new manager will want to sign one or two players as quickly as possible, most likely ones he knows from a previous club, although doing so in January at Ibrox is highly improbable.
Instead, Clement will need to work swiftly to find the top players available to him at each position if he accepts the contract proposal from the Rangers board.
There is no reason a recognized coach like the Belgian, who led Genk to a championship in his native country, cannot at the very least get the Gers back on track with the players already at the club.
One can decide on incoming and exiting activities after it is obvious who can and cannot play under Clement.
Another contender is said to have followed Clement in holding a second round of negotiations with the Gers, according to other Rangers news.
