Wyc Grousbeck talks about the significance of the franchise winning a championship this year and why he thinks the Celtics have a good chance of doing it with their current core over the next six years.
There will be no change in the Boston Celtics’ commitment anytime soon.
Jrue Holiday’s official press conference and the team’s official welcome to Boston were both on Wednesday. Brad Stevens, the C’s president of basketball operations, and co-owners Wyc Grousbeck and Steve Pagliuca also participated in the press conference with Holiday.
Grousbeck was asked if the upcoming season is the largest since the “Big Three” of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce was put together in 2008. The Celtics are now viewed as co-favorites alongside the Milwaukee Bucks to win the NBA championship in 2024. His response ought to inspire hope for the C’s in the future.
Grousbeck responded, “I see the next six years as a wonderful chance for us. And it’s not to diminish this year in any way, but we’re going to keep trying until we find that banner and print something on it, or we’re going to die trying. ‘We’re going to win Banner 17 or I’m going to die trying,’ was the first statement made when we initially arrived twenty years ago. We are now aiming for Banner 18. We’ll keep moving forward.
If that happened this year, that would be fantastic. This year, we have the potential, but so do many other clubs. So, it all depends on how linked they may be. How fortunate can we be when we are hurt? How does the ball get the perfect bounce? But we’re giving it our all, and Jrue being here as a Celtic makes me happy. It’s been a long-time ambition, and reaching it now feels fantastic.
The Celtics now have perhaps the finest roster in the NBA with the addition of Holiday. Marcus Smart, a seasoned C’s guard who was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in the historic three-way trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, is perfectly replaced by the five-time All-Defense pick.
