Xisco Munoz, the former manager of Watford, was fired by Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night while his team remained at the bottom of the Championship standings. Munoz just took over for the departing Darren Moore in the summer, but his brief tenure at the club has come to an end after just eight league games with no victories and just two draws.
Former Newcastle United player Joey Barton has come to light as a potential possibility as the Owls look for Munoz’s replacement. Bristol Rovers of League One are presently managed by Barton.
The Gas trounced Port Vale 3-0 over the weekend, moving them up to 11th in the standings. Along with some other well-known figures, Barton, who formerly served as Fleetwood Town’s manager, has been linked to the Hillsborough opening.
The current favorite to succeed Munoz is said to be Neil Warnock, who has experience working on the opposing side of the Steel City divide. Warnock, who helped lead Huddersfield Town to safety in the Championship last season, just left his position as manager; if hired by the Owls, he would be given the same responsibility.
Carlos Carvalhal, the former manager of the Owls, has also been hotly predicted to return to Hillsborough. During the 2016–17 Championship season, he orchestrated two victories over Newcastle United. The position has also been connected to Nathan Jones, Danny Rohl, and Dean Smith, the former manager of Aston Villa and Leicester City.
The 44-year-old, who works with his brother Nicky, hasn’t had a job since leaving Pompey in January of this year, but it seems like he’d be eager to get one if the appropriate opportunity presented itself.
After parting ways with Xisco this week, Wednesday are looking for a new management. A number of names have been mentioned over the course of the last several hours, and it appears that Cowley would be willing to participate in that discussion.
