After taking over in October of last year, the former hoops great is currently in charge of League One team Exeter City. After a strong start to the season, Caldwell’s team, who finished 14th last year, is currently in the play-off places.
His team appears to be storing their best play for the League Cup, though. Exeter has already passed through three rounds of the competition and joined teams like Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool in the round of 16.
Their most recent victory was over Luton Town, a Premier League opponent. This past week at St. James Park, the newly promoted team lost 1-0 as former Hearts and Hibs player Demetri Mitchell scored the game-winning goal.
Exeter has received a home round draw so far. They were matched with Championship underachievers Middlesbrough in what must be regarded as a winnable tie on Wednesday night’s draw, continuing that streak.
Caldwell, who won four titles while playing for Celtic, has been a manager for a while; he started out at Wigan Athletic in 2015. He has also served as the manager of Chesterfield, Partick Thistle, and Manchester City’s Loans Coach.
It’s encouraging to see him succeeding in the game. You’d like to think that bigger clubs will at least be aware of his accomplishments given that Exeter is only three points off of table-topping Portsmouth.
He has a number of well-known names in Scottish football playing for him, as you might anticipate. That includes Jack Aitchison — the former Celtic forward who became our youngest-ever goalscorer back in 2016.
