Following a groundbreaking decision from the EFL and Premier League, Leeds United will receive financial support.
Since the EFL and Premier League are completely distinct organizations, they typically sell their TV rights separately. However, in a historic proposed agreement, the two league organizers may potentially work together to secure a big collective TV rights contract.
The Premier League has now suggested to its teams that the EFL join their sale process in order to construct a single package for the 2028 round of TV rights auctions.
In addition to an additional bonus payment of £88 million later this season, the Premier League is reportedly providing the EFL 14.75% of the revenue from the contract for the next season. The value of the agreement will depend on the purchase price of any deal, but according to reports, the 14.75% share that will remain in place will likely be worth twice as much as the £130 million in solidarity payments that the Premier League currently sends to the EFL, and that doesn’t include parachute payments given to clubs that were relegated and moved down to the second tier.
According to reports, the agreement would initially only permit the sale of overseas rights beginning with the 2028–2029 season, but domestic rights are expected to be added later. The EFL would be a part of the Premier League’s next deal, which would begin in 2028. The Premier League is presently planning to auction the next round of its 2024–2028 rights. Over three years, the Premier League has received £5 billion from the newest international partnerships.
In order to ensure that the financial advancement of EFL teams is more in line with that of Premier League clubs, EFL chairman Rick Parry has been asking for the EFL and Premier League to work together. The article also states that local broadcasters like Sky Sports would welcome a domestic version of the deal because they would like to purchase Premier League and EFL rights under one package, providing additional long-term security. He now appears to be getting his desire in the long run.
