Demetri Mitchell, a winger, received a lot of accolades for his man-of-the-match performance and winning goal that eliminated Luton Town of the Premier League from the Carabao Cup. Seven minutes from the end, Mitchell’s goal was enough for Exeter City to secure a 1-0 victory and advance to the round of sixteen for the first time since 1989.
In the 83rd minute, the 26-year-old pounced to score his third goal of the year. Issa Kabore was supposed to clear Yanic Wildschut’s cross, but he blundered and Mitchell snuck in to push the ball in off the crossbar.
Five minutes later, Mitchell was dismissed for a second infraction that was punishable by a booking as City struggled to hold off late Hatters pressure. But they managed to hang on, making it to the fourth round for the first time in 34 years and defeating a top division team for the first time since 1981.
After stints with Scottish and other English clubs, the former Manchester United youth player signed with Exeter in January. He has had a nomadic career thus far, but he is now demonstrating his undeniable quality for the Grecians and putting clubs higher up the pyramid back on his radar.
Gary Caldwell, manager of City, who had worked with Mitchell on a number of occasions prior to signing him in January, said of him: “He’s been outstanding since he got to the club.
He has a ton of talent as a player. He needs to bring it all together, which I believe he has done numerous times since joining this football team. Everyone agreed that his ability to run us up the field and score a goal while playing on the wrong side and moving to the other side was simply great tonight.
“I have a terrific relationship with him and have worked one-on-one with him for a very long time. Although he has always had exceptional talent, he required direction and assistance to advance. It was amazing for him to have his time tonight since he has found his place here.
