A look at Leeds United’s injury list and projected comeback dates as the team prepares to play Southampton this weekend.

Leeds United swept away Watford 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday, making it seven points from three games in less than a week. Daniel Farke’s team will now start the new week in the Championship’s play-off spots.

With no midweek games this week, all eyes will be on Saturday’s trip to Southampton, where Leeds will play another of last season’s relegated clubs, the Saints, who have lost four games in a row as they adjust to their new circumstances. Leeds will also be able to recover throughout the break.

Here’s an update on Leeds United’s injury status ahead of their trip to St Mary’s.

Wilfried Gnonto – foot

The Italian international was taken out against Hull City last week due to an ankle injury, and Farke stated following the win against Watford that he will need surgery, which will keep him out until after the international break in October.

“Yes, he’s done his ligament, he also needs a little surgery but not because of the ligament but because there’s so little bone that has to be cleaned, so he’ll be out I guess until the next international break,” Farke stated on September 23. It’s clearly a setback for us, but injuries happen in sports, and we aim to get him back as soon as possible.”

Knee Djed Spence
Tottenham loanee Spence damaged his knee in training earlier this month, and the club has confirmed he will be out for up to eight weeks.
“Yes, sad news with Spence because Djed has done his lateral ligaments,” Farke revealed on September 17th. He will be away for several weeks as we await additional evaluation. It appears that no surgery is required, but we must await further evaluation. He will undoubtedly be absent in the next weeks. We’ll have to wait to give you a timeline on this, but he’ll be away for a few weeks.”

“Leeds United defender Djed Spence suffered a knee injury during a training challenge last week, and following scans, we can confirm he has damaged his lateral collateral ligament.” The injury is not believed to necessitate surgery, and Djed is expected to return to the pitch within eight weeks.

“We wish Djed a speedy recovery.”

Patrick Bamford is a hamstring specialist.
Bamford injured his hamstring on the eve of the new season, but he has already returned to training. Prior to the win over Watford, Farke provided an update on the striker.

Farke stated on September 22nd, “No, not fully fit.” We will still be cautious with him because he was away for eight weeks and has only been back in team training for around six days. This week, I believe, was also not the easiest since we exercised in small groups to differentiate between players with heavy loads and those who were not as active on the pitch.

“As a result, it was not the easiest week for him to return to team training.” I believe the next week will be good because we will have more time on the training pitch, and I anticipate him to be back in the mix next week. Obviously, he needs game time to get into his groove, but a fit Patrick Bamford with rhyme and confidence is priceless. The proof was also in preseason, when I believe he had some very spectacular games and scored some really excellent goals. The most important item for him is that he’s fit, that he develops confidence through training and also through games, that he’s in this rhythm, and that he can score.

Junior Firpo – Left-back Knee Firpo also hurt himself just before the season began and is still working his way back to full health.

Farke stated on September 19th, “Junior is still training individually; we hope to return to team training as soon as possible.”
