After his wife tragically passed away from cancer three months after they wed, Derby County goalkeeper Josh Vickers wrote a heartfelt ode to her.
Josh, 27, penned the following tragic statement in a blog post: “I have written and unwritten this so many times and still can’t find the perfect words to express and don’t know if I ever will.
“On Tuesday night, my wife passed away after a protracted struggle with cancer.
“Laura is the most resilient, courageous, and kind person I’ve ever known. She maintained her smile despite all that was happening to her, never letting anything stand in the way of having fun and creating lifelong memories.
“We have worked through some difficult times by laughing, crying, and dancing. From the very first time we met to the moment you gently went away, I will treasure every second we had together. I am confident that you are watching over me and will never stop motivating me.
“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me and both families get through this tremendously trying period. I’m so lucky to have such wonderful family and friends! I will always and forever love you.
Many of Josh’s supporters hurried to express their sympathy, with one writing: “We are heartbroken for you Josh. Because Laura was such a remarkable and inspirational person, her light will always shine.
I consider myself quite fortunate to be able to say that I know Laura. I’m sending you and your families my deepest sympathies during this trying time. xxx”
The moment she informed us about you, Josh, we knew she had found her true match. We are thinking of you and all of Laura’s friends and family and sending you our love and support. We shall appreciate our time spent with her, remember her, and tell her tale forever. Thank you from the Metheringham Primary School community.
The football player posted pictures of Josh and Laura’s wedding day on his Instagram page with the caption “Mr & Mrs Vickers – 01.06.2023,” along with a white heart emoji. Josh and Laura only got married three months ago.
In the highlands of Canada in June 2022, Josh got down on one knee and proposed to Laura.
He wrote, “She Said YES/,” alongside a photo of her hand holding a gorgeous diamond ring.
