Swiss experts’ most recent data CIES has disclosed how much each club has had to pay to construct their roster, with the Magpies competing with European powerhouses.
According to figures from the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), Newcastle United’s team is among the top ten most expensive in the world, and is just £40 million less than Real Madrid’s.
Premier League teams dominate the world’s most costly squads, with eight of the top 10 being Premier League clubs. Only the so-called “big six” have spent more money on players than Newcastle, who now sit ninth in the Premier League rankings. United are still trailing the world’s top spenders, with four clubs – Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, and PSG – spending more than a billion euros to create their current squads, compared to Newcastle’s €661 million (£576 million).
The journey from relegation-threatened Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce to the glitter of the Champions League group stages has felt meteoric, but it’s taken a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get the club from the bottom of the Premier League to the splendour of the group stages. Success in the transfer market, in particular, has been critical to the club’s success, with Eddie Howe receiving strong backing in his desire to retain the club at Europe’s top table.

Only six teams in the world have a more costly midfield than Newcastle, which has cost the club €261 million. A further €229 million has been spent on Newcastle’s attacking line, with the defence costing a more modest €150 million.
The estimates gathered by the Switzerland-based research firm include transfer costs, add-ons, and borrowing fees.
