We’re thrilled to welcome Sky Sports journalist Dan Bardell as our exclusive Aston Villa blogger; each week, he’ll share his thoughts on the club’s most pressing issues…

According to Dan Bardell, Clement Lenglet’s season-long loan move to Aston Villa is the best the club could do for a short-term replacement for Tyrone Mings despite possessing the same skill.

When the club revealed on 14 August that Mings would miss a lengthy amount of time due to a “significant knee injury” suffered against Newcastle United, many anticipated that Villa would remain active in the market to find a successor.

Emery’s hopes were fulfilled when Barcelona centre-back Lenglet was signed on loan from Tottenham. While he is a veteran international player, many have questioned if he is capable of replacing Mings’ skills in the Villa backline.

One anxious fan, Bardell, has confessed that Lenglet is “purely cover” for the Englishman and that his “chief concern” about the Frenchman’s move is his lack of physical presence. He says, however, that Villa “couldn’t have done much better” for a short-term replacement because they “can’t live without” a left-sided center-back.

“I think it’s purely cover for Tyrone Mings,” Bardell told Villa News exclusively. If Mings is not injured, Clement Lenglet will not join with Villa.
