More than 1100 Reading fans traveled to Cambridge United for the first time in almost 20 years.

Unfortunately, they went home disappointed, as the U’s scored late to win 1-0 in a match broadcast live on Sky Sports.

‘It was candid and open,’ says Conor Shaughnessy, who overcame a snub from Portsmouth to become a first-team regular.

And, after being left out of Pompey’s first-team squad, the soft-spoken Irishman’s non-selection is now unfathomable.

The Blues presently have the joint-best defensive return in League One, having gone 445 minutes without conceding.

It’s an amazing record established when Regan Poole was joined in the center of defense by Shaughnessy at Leyton Orient.

The acquisition from Burton was overlooked for Ryley Towler in the season opener against Bristol Rovers, and he didn’t even make the 18-man squad in a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park.

Since then, Mousinho’s men have conceded one goal in five league games, with Shaughnessy starting all of them.

‘I am old enough to realize football can change very quickly for the good or the bad, so when things don’t go my way, like the first game of the season, I knew I had to get my head down and do things right,’ said the 27-year-old.

‘We had the Carabao Cup (Forest Green) a few days later, so there would be an opportunity for me to shine – and happily, the game went well and the manager made the change.

‘I had a conversation with the manager when he named the team a couple of days before Bristol Rovers and I wasn’t in it.

‘It was honest and transparent; I just asked what I needed to do to get back into the team and why. It was everything really great, with no problems.

‘The message was to just keep doing what I’m doing, keep a positive mindset, and don’t make it easy for them to leave me out of the team.
