Evan Ferguson and Newcastle United star Alan Shearer share similarities, according to veteran Brighton defender James Milner.
Evan Ferguson scored a hat-trick as the Seagulls defeated Eddie Howe’s side 3-1 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
At Brighton, James Milner is watching Ferguson’s progress closely and feels the 18-year-old striker has the potential to be a future star.
Ferguson, according to the 37-year-old, “is still so young, but what a player for us, and the ceiling is very high for him.” I did have a game with Alan Shearer. They are both excellent goal scorers.”
While Milner’s comparison of Ferguson and Shearer was not particularly comprehensive, the fact that the Irish kid
Milner was, in fact, Shearer’s teammate at St James’ Park. The pair played for the Tyneside club for two seasons until the all-time Premier League top goalscorer announced his retirement.
Newcastle must be prepared to make the Ferguson move.
Ferguson appears to have all of the makings of an excellent goalscorer. Despite his youth, the 6’2″ forward is a composed, instinctive finisher with the muscle to overpower Premier League defenders. The £20,000-a-week star can also drop deep and link play efficiently.
Prior to this weekend, Newcastle were fully aware of the threat that the Republic of Ireland international posed. The Magpies scouted the Brighton teenager at the end of last season, according to 90min.
Ferguson may have been recognized as a potential future transfer target by Howe. Newcastle must position themselves to win the race for his signature when the time comes. The club now has the necessary funds.
