Kurt Capewell’s immediate move to the Warriors is reportedly “highly likely” to take place after being given permission to depart the Broncos early.
That is according to Nine News’ Ben Dobbin, who is reporting that Brisbane powerbrokers informed the experienced backrower his services aren’t required past his current deal.
Capewell is contracted until the end of 2024 but has a big decision looming regarding a trans-Tasman move.
Kurt Capewell has a contract expiring in 2024, but it’s very likely that he has played his final game for the Brisbane Broncos. The Broncos have told Capewell that they won’t be re-signing him for any more seasons after that.
“He hasn’t decided yet, but the Broncos have given him their approval to pursue that (deal) and receive an early release, according to their conversation with them today.”
The veteran backrower, who previously collaborated with Andrew Webster at the Panthers, is reportedly on the verge of signing a three-year contract with the Warriors.
After exploring the club’s facilities earlier that day, Capewell and Webster were seen getting together on Friday night at Viaduct Harbour in Auckland.
Backrow players Brendan Piakura and Jordan Riki were already re-signed by the Broncos, which allowed Capewell to leave the Red Hill team.
The Warriors hope that Capewell’s background and winning attitude will enable them to advance their young forward group.
The 30-year-old played for the Sharks during their grand final victory in 2016 and went on to win a premiership with Penrith in 2021 before facing Brisbane in the finals the previous season.
The Broncos’ salary cap pressure would also be relieved by Capewell’s departure, as superstars Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam are due for contract upgrades.

When Tupou’s contract expires in November 2024, the Roosters and the Raiders are reportedly considering him, according to The Daily Telegraph.
With six tries in 22 games the previous season, the 21-year-old solidified his place on the Tigers roster and increased his career total to eight from 26 games since his debut in 2022.
