We simply struggle to maintain. There are times when the physicality intensifies and we lose our offensive edge. And it gets tough and the leads fade if you don’t score and are constantly playing transition defense.
Being unable to sustain leads is a common trait of young teams, and the Spurs are among the NBA’s youngest teams. On Saturday night, San Antonio experienced that once more.
Memphis was behind the Spurs by as much as 17 points at the half, and the score was 94-87 going into the fourth quarter. However, Memphis went on a 24-5 run to start the fourth quarter, capping the run with a layup by Desmond Bane after Bismack Biyambo missed a free throw on a possible three-point play, giving Memphis a 102-99 lead. Jackson finished the run with ten points.
There is an effort. I see the wheels going in motion. Nobody enjoys a loss.
One bright spot for the Spurs was rookie Victor Wembanyama, who tied Tim Duncan and David Robinson for the most blocks in a single game in Spurs history with eight against Memphis.
The Spurs’ next game is on Monday at home against the Los Angeles Clippers.
