Former Arsenal striker and Premier League legend Ian Wright has now urged Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy to back his manager during the January transfer window.
The Tottenham chairman has often been criticised for his lack of ambition in the transfer market and Wright believes that Levy should help Tottenham sign quality players during the January window so that they can sustain their current run of form and finish the season strongly.
When Spurs were on the up under Mauricio Pochettino, Levy was blamed for not backing the manager during crucial stages of the rebuild and Tottenham ended up without silverware. Pochettino managed to challenge for the title with Tottenham and he guided them to the final of the UEFA Champions League as well. However, his team could not cross the final hurdle because of the lack of depth and quality on the side.
Wright has urged Levy not to repeat his mistake with Ange Postecoglou and back the manager.
“I think Levy this January more than any other time, and I know it’s very difficult to get really top-end players, he really does have to back Ange with some players,” the legendary Arsenal player stated on The Kelly and Wrighty Show.
“He doesn’t want to talk about what he did with Poch; following their second-place finish in the Champions League, he wanted to bring some players in and get some out, and in the end, he moved on.” With Conte and then Mourinho, Tottenham took a step backward. Ange needs support because he is bringing them back.
It’s no secret that Tottenham needs to bolster their roster several times in January. They ought to try to acquire a striker, a central midfielder, and a top-notch central defender. It will be interesting to see if Levy is willing to provide the funding for changes and the reinforcements that are required.
Spurs will be itching to get back to the UEFA Champions League after an incredible start to the current season. Their chances of finishing in the top four will definitely be increased if they sign the right players in January.
