After a run of disappointing performances, the Chiefs fired Molefi Ntseki in October, and they are currently searching for a new coach.
As soon as a new coach is named, Cavin Johnson, who is currently Amakhosi’s caretaker coach, will probably return to his role as head of development.
Several names have been floated as potential Ntseki replacements, including Spanishman Raul Caneda, Pitso Mosimane, and Sven Vandenbroeck.
The Soweto giants are anticipated to keep their new coach a secret until the halftime show.
All eyes are on the Chiefs to see if they will at last have a coach that can give them the championship they so desperately want.
They have come under fire for selecting the wrong coaches in recent years, most notably when they appointed Arthur Zwane and later Molefi Ntseki.
Chiefs have even criticised Gavin Hunt for being impatient, believing the veteran coach was forced to work with limited options while the Soweto giants were prohibited from acquiring players by Fifa.
According to Sowetan Live, Motaung stated, “He [Johnson] will be part of the journey [to appoint a new coach].”
“Recall that we brought him here with a development vision, to lead the youth and scouting [departments] and stabilise the technical affairs.” However, we asked him to serve as interim coach after Ntseki’s firing because he is a qualified head coach.
We must share a common vision. Let’s say we hire a Brazilian coach, and he introduces his own philosophy that is at odds with our progress. Coach Johnson is aware of our long-term goals.
“Everything must proceed as planned because the future is dependent upon the first team’s success.”
Mosimane and Johnson previously worked together at Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
But Johnson unceremoniously left the North African club and to this day no reason for his departure has been forthcoming amongst rumours of a rift with Mosimane.
It is to be seen the Chiefs interim coach will vouch for Mosimane in the club’s search for a new man to take charge, or even if Chiefs could match the financial requirements Pitso would demand for his services.
Chiefs are still looking for a new coach and no announcement is expected over the international break.
That means Johnson will not only be searching for his successor but will also likely coach the team in PSL fixtures against Swallows, Polokwane City, Richards Bay and Sekhukhune before the Afcon break.
The Soweto giants currently lie 10th in the league with a W4 D2 L6 record and have only the Nedbank Cup competition left as a realistic trophy target.
