Everton are clearly one of the clubs showing an interest in signing Portuguese defender Cedric Soares from Arsenal this week.

The 32-year-old was tipped to leave the Gunners before the deadline last night but no club came forward to sign him.

ESPN’s James Olley has now revealed that Everton are indeed considering him.

Everton express interest in Arsenal defender Cedric Soares

Arsenal signed Cédric Soares on an initial loan in January 2020.

The transfer became permanent the following summer, but the Portuguese full-back was never the club’s first choice. Arsenal sent Cedric to Fulham on loan earlier this year, and since his return they have been keen to sell him permanently.

It was expected that he would leave yesterday, and Everton appeared to have shown interest in trying to sign him earlier this week.

In the end, however, none of the moves materialized.

Olley tweeted:
“Everton and Olympiacos showed interest in Arsenal defender Cedric Soares this week.

“It didn’t materialize yesterday, but there’s still time for Olympiacos if they choose to pursue it – the transfer deadline in Greece is September 11.”

Arsenal did everything they could to transfer many of their players during the summer transfer window. The Gunners have sold Rob Holding, Auston Trusty, Pablo Mari, Matt Turner, Granit Xhaka and Folarin Balogun, while Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Kieran Tierney and Marquinhos are all on loan.

The two people who missed were Nicolas Pépé and Cédric “wonderful”.

Arsenal are hoping clubs in other leagues where the transfer market is still open will move to sign both players in the coming days.
