Under Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer, Breslow most recently held the positions of Assistant General Manager and Vice President of Pitching.
Breslow will replace Chaim Bloom, who was fired in September after the Red Sox finished in last place two straight seasons, as the team’s front office manager in his new position.
The Yale graduate has pitched for the Red Sox twice, from 2013 to 2015, so he has a lot of knowledge with the team. Breslow had a major role in Boston’s 2013 World Series winning squad, pitching out of the bullpen in 61 games with a 1.81 ERA.
Following his playing retirement at the end of the 2017 campaign, Breslow became the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Cubs in 2019. In 2020, he rose fast to become the team’s Director of Pitching, and in February 2023, he received a promotion to Assistant General Manager.
For his efforts in bolstering the Cubs’ pitching development program and infrastructure, Breslow received high marks. The Red Sox are hoping he can perform a similar miracle to turn around their underperforming pitching staff, which finished the previous season ranked 22nd in MLB in ERA.
Breslow defeated a number of other applicants for the position, including former Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington, general manager of the Minnesota Twins Thad Levine, and internal options Brian O’Halloran and Eddie Romero.
For Breslow, it’s a return to Boston, the city that produced his biggest playing moments. He will now search for that achievement in the front office.
