Following a hearing on his appeal on Tuesday, the NFL announced that Kareem Jackson, a safety with the Denver Broncos, had his four-game ban for repeated unnecessary roughness fouls reduced to two games. Derrick Brooks, a former linebacker and one of the two officials selected by the NFL and the NFL Players Association to oversee such cases, heard Jackson’s case on Tuesday.
The 14-year veteran Jackson will miss the Broncos’ games against Kansas City on Sunday and a Monday Night game against Buffalo on November 13 due to injury. He may resume working out on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and will be able to play against Minnesota the following weekend. Jackson will have financial effects from the decline. A two-game ban will only cost him $279,444 in game checks, not the double of his $2,515,000 annual pay.
Jackson was dismissed for the second time this season on Monday, leading to the league’s ban. The most recent one involved a blow on Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave. Over Denver’s first six games, Jackson received four fines for unwarranted roughness, totaling $89,670. Three of those instances included head contact. Then, on Sunday, he nailed Musgrave, a tight end who was viewed as an undefended receiver. After the Sunday hit, Broncos players and notable commentators like former Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman defended Jackson.
