Chris Powell, a former coach of both Tottenham Hotspur and England, is apparently about to join Danny Rohl’s coaching staff at Hillsborough as the German attempts to put up a fresh backroom squad.
Following Darren Moore’s summer departure, Xisco Munoz, a Spaniard, held the position for just three months before being named the next Sheffield Wednesday manager. Moore has now been appointed manager of Huddersfield Town, and Powell, the former manager of the Terriers, now appears prepared to make the reverse move.
After three and a half years in the position, Powell left Gareth Southgate’s England setup in March. He gave the reason that he wanted to focus entirely on his post as director of Tottenham’s academy, which he later opted to leave in August.

John Percy and Mike McGrath of The Telegraph have just reported that Powell has been lined up for a position on Rohl’s backroom team. In his news conference on Thursday, the German had hinted that he was trying to hire a specific coach with managerial experience, but he had refrained from naming them. Powell, a former manager of Southend, Huddersfield, and Charlton, would undoubtedly match that description.
The 34-year-old Rohl, who has coached at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich, and the German national side, is taking his first steps into senior management with the Owls. Wednesday’s first match under his management will take place this weekend at Watford, then the team will travel far to Plymouth in the middle of the week, and the South Yorkshire derby at home against 23rd-placed Rotherham United the following Sunday will be crucial.
With just three points after eleven games, Sheffield Wednesday is in last place in the Championship. Since achieving promotion through the League One play-offs under Moore the previous season, they have yet to record a victory.
