On Wednesday afternoon, the Miami Dolphins restructured the contract of kicker Jason Sanders ot free up around $1.33 million in salary cap space. Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap reported the deal and mentioned that the Dolphins were almost out of cap room.
Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills have less cap room than the Dolphins ($3,472,217) for the 2023 season, per OTC. Miami made some room for maneuver, but that doesn’t necessarily imply they’ll use the funds right away.
The extra cap space may be saved by general manager Chris Grier to help deal with any injuries that might occur in the upcoming months. Before adding wide out Robbie Chosen and linebacker Cameron Goode to the 53-man roster, the Dolphins made an unanticipated but essential move by adding defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand.
Prior to the 2021 season, Sanders signed a $22 million, 5-year deal. Of his 28 efforts at extra points this season, the 2020 first-team All-Pro has only missed one.
