Sunderland, who experienced the sorrow of a semi-final exit in the previous campaign, appear to be on track to once again challenge for a spot in the Championship play-offs this season. Tony Mowbray’s team has thus far built a strong case for the third promotion berth, sitting in fourth place with 19 points, ahead of teams like Leeds United, Southampton, and Norwich City, and with a trip at Wembley in their sights come May.

The Black Cats may look to the January transfer window and one possible future star who has battled for playing time in the Premier League to guarantee that they make the move that they failed to make last season.

The Championship team signed several players during the summer transfer window, from Jobe Bellingham to Jenson Seelt, as Sunderland’s summer expenditure surpassed the €8 million mark. The newcomers have adapted quickly, and Mowbray’s team hasn’t missed a beat thus far in the current season. Sunderland and Preston North End are leading the group of teams seeking the automatic promotion berths, which are currently held by Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

The good news keeps flowing for The Stadium of Light as well; according to the most recent Amad Diallo transfer rumours, Sunderland wants to re-sign the Manchester United prospect on loan in the coming months. The winger has suffered with injuries and, as a result, failed to impress Erik ten Hag, thus the Red Devils are prepared to let him to make another short-term transfer abroad, according to TeamTalk. Given that Diallo previously performed well when on loan at Sunderland, people on Wearside are optimistic that they can re-sign the 21-year-old.

If Sunderland is successful in securing a loan agreement for Diallo once more, Mowbray could have the last piece of the jigsaw needed to earn promotion from the Championship.

Diallo’s goals and assists in the Championship while on loan at Sunderland last season speak for themselves. Thirteen goals were scored by the former Atalanta winger, while three more were assisted by him. He was the driving force behind all the Black Cats’ successful play-off efforts, and he even scored once. Given that he has previously complimented Diallo, Mowbray is undoubtedly a great supporter of the kid as well.

“I believe he emotionally invested himself in the game on Saturday (against Luton), and that was encouraging to watch. With his physical attributes, he was the best in every category, including the number of high-speed sprints and the distance travelled. He also demonstrated his talent while being incredibly athletic.

“That bodes well for us and also accelerates him in my mind in terms of him being a starting player for us, beyond a young lad who I can bring off the bench.”
