Jordan Willis, a former Sunderland and Coventry defender, has joined League One club Northampton and says he is eager to get started.
After sustaining a torn patella tendon during a match against Shrewsbury in 2019, the 29-year-old centre-back officially departed Sunderland last year. He stayed at the Academy of Light to finish his recuperation before joining Wycombe on a short-term contract in February of this year.
Willis played nine League One games for Wycombe before being released at the end of the season. The defender had been without a club since May but signed a short-term contract with Northampton last week that will continue until January.
“I’ve been here for a while and things are going well,” the centre-back told Northampton’s official website. “It’s been great to get some training in and meet with the lads.” They seem like a terrific group, and now that I’ve signed a contract, I can’t wait to get started.
“You can tell the club is in good shape after just one week of training.” You can see the talent of the group, and I aim to contribute and help the club improve.”
I know a few of the boys. I worked with Lee Burge at Sunderland and Coventry, and I also played alongside Ryan Haynes at Coventry. We all passed through Coventry at the same time, so it’s been great to meet them again.
“I started at Coventry as a 17-year-old and stayed there until I was about 24 before moving on to Sunderland for two seasons.” Last season, I spent six months at Wycombe after signing in January. I got in a couple games, and now I’m feeling fit and healthy, and I’m ready to hit the ground running.”
Northampton manager Jon Brady stated of Willis’ arrival: “We are delighted to welcome Jordan to the club.” He is a defender with a wealth of experience, notably in League One, and we believe he will give depth to the squad at a crucial position.”
