James Harmes, a midfielder for the Melbourne Demons, has been moved to the Western Bulldogs in exchange for a future draught choice.

Harmes, a member of the Demons’ 2021 premiership team, had a contract for the next season and reportedly attracted attention from a number of teams in the latter part of this year.

The Bulldogs needed to reach an arrangement with Melbourne over the next week since Harmes had a 2024 contract.

This year, the 28-year-old chose the Kennel as his final destination and will go to the Bulldogs in exchange for a future third-round pick.

The trade of the future pick marks the third deal this week in which a 2024 pick has changed hands; earlier this week, Fremantle acquired Port Adelaide’s first-round pick for the next season, and the Suns acquired the Dogs’ first-round pick.

because trading for the No. 4 pick of the Gold Coast Suns, which is now Pick 5 because North Melbourne received band one draught compensation for the potential loss of free agency Ben McKay, the Bulldogs currently have selections 5, 39, 47, 52, 68, 71, and 74.

Inside Trading on AFL.com.au reported on the Bulldogs’ interest in Harmes, 28, on Saturday, and the transaction was finalised on Tuesday with the Demons receiving a future third-round pick as compensation.
After Luke Beveridge’s team was unable to reach the finals in 2023, Harmes has signed a three-year contract that runs until the end of 2026, giving the Bulldogs’ midfield more depth.

Bulldogs list manager Luke Power stated, “James comes to us with lots of experience, having played over 150 games and earning a championship during his nine years in the system.

“His defensive mindset and ability to cover the ground will add to our midfield group, while he also has the versatility to play in a variety of roles.”

Despite being contracted to the Demons through the end of 2024, clubs have eyed Harmes as a trade option throughout this year.

The 28-year-old, who was involved in the Demons’ 2021 flag victory, played nine games this season after piqueing Essendon’s interest during the previous Trade Period.

The powerful midfielder, who has appeared in 152 games for the team, concluded the season in the VFL after the Demons were eliminated from the playoffs.

Deakyn Smith was delisted, Luke Dunstan and Michael Hibberd retired, while James Jordon left the Dees for Sydney as a free agent.

Tim Lamb, the Demons list manager, said of Harmes, “He has evolved as both a person and a player in our atmosphere and has always demonstrated real compassion for his teammates and coaches.

“We respect James’ decision to explore his options and seek greater opportunities, and thank him for all he has done for the Melbourne Football Club.”
