Since leaving Hillsborough in November 2020, Garry Monk has been devoid of a professional football position for three years.
But amid intense dissatisfaction with the club’s poor performance, he has surfaced as a prospective new manager at dominant Serie B team Sampdoria, according to their local publication Il Secolo XIX.
Playing icon and former Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo is in charge at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, although he has only managed one victory in nine games for the team, which was demoted from the Italian top division last season and is aiming for an immediate comeback.
The club has a long history and has only played one season outside of Serie A in the past 20 years.
Although Monk is the only name that has been mentioned and now seems to be the front-runner, it is emphasised that other options are being taken into account if Pirlo is to be fired at Sampdoria.
Since departing Wednesday in 2020, former Swansea City, Leeds United, and Middlesbrough manager Monk has spent time developing a coaching company.

What could be worse than an attack on the club from the inside and outside? being satirised. worse than your anger? Apathy. That sense of hopelessness, when you could just as easily laugh or cry. the current status of Sheffield Wednesday following their worst season ever.
And what could be worse than finishing last in the Championship? At this rate, it may still be measured by a division or two. Which I’ve even heard some supporters claim would be worthwhile to topple this government. That is then you realise it is truly terrible.
With a really poor management selection who appears to want to be put out of his misery. Compounded by the question of whether an owner who is unjustly angry has the motivation or means to fix his monumental error. Would Neil Warnock, who is on the lips of many in need, accept it? Of course! (where many other trustworthy managers would be afraid to go). But perhaps the idea is too sane and rational to be implemented.
The tragedy is made even more heartbreaking by the fact that Wednesday’s owner has shown every ounce of dedication and support imaginable. Against a tsunami of sound advise, his brazen top-down misdirection completely destroyed the situation.
Which, if there was any comedy to be found, brings me to a sobering fact I read about last week: this season, Wednesday has made three more chairman’s remarks than points (two). According to one media colleague, it’s a circus and a laughing stock. Too accurate.
