WHAT OCCURED? The 22-year-old fell down late in the first half of the Championship match and required extensive treatment, which included the use of an oxygen mask. He was finally hauled off, and coach Carlos Corberan believes the attacker will be gone for several months. The manager then dedicated his team’s victory to the player.
WHAT THEY added: “It appears to be an Achilles injury, and they never fully recover,” he added. “Achilles injuries are never simple to handle, but we must still examine… We need to observe how much damage emerges, and then we’ll know how many months.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE: The event is a major setback for Dike, who has been prone to injuries in recent years, with a thigh injury earlier this season keeping him out of the 2022 World Cup. His recent form – he has scored seven Championship goals since December 12 – has placed him back in contention for a spot in the team for the forthcoming CONCACAF Nations League semi-final against Mexico in June. Instead, other strikers will be given opportunities.
WHAT COMES NEXT? The forward will be tested further, but given the severity of Achilles injury, he may struggle to regain his best form when he returns.
