The LSU community is in mourning today following the sudden and tragic death of sophomore defensive lineman Marcus “MJ” Taylor, who was killed in a car accident late Wednesday night just outside of Baton Rouge.
According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, the 20-year-old Taylor was driving alone on LA-30 when his vehicle lost control during a heavy rainstorm and struck a tree. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but Taylor was pronounced dead on arrival. No other vehicles were involved.
Taylor, a native of Shreveport, had just completed his breakout season with the Tigers, registering 8.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Known for his relentless work ethic, infectious smile, and leadership off the field, Taylor was widely expected to be a cornerstone of LSU’s defense in the 2025 season.
“This is a devastating loss,” said LSU head coach Brian Kelly in a statement. “MJ was more than a great athlete—he was a beloved teammate, a fierce competitor, and a young man of deep character. Our hearts are broken.”
Taylor’s death has sent shockwaves through the LSU community, with teammates, fans, and alumni taking to social media to share memories and condolences. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for Friday evening at Tiger Stadium, and grief counselors are available for students and athletes.
LSU Athletics Director Scott Woodward also expressed sorrow, calling Taylor “an inspiration both on and off the field” and promising that the university would support the Taylor family in every way possible.
Marcus “MJ” Taylor is survived by his parents, two younger siblings, and a legacy that will not be forgotten by the LSU faithful.
