The versatile 24–year-old, who won the most recent of his 23 Hungary caps in this summer’s Euros, has signed a four-year contract.

“I couldn’t turn an opportunity like this down,” said Styles. “Albion are a big club who should be in the Premier League. The ambition for everyone is to get back there. I really want to be successful here, both as an individual and as part of the team.”

Styles, whose move was completed after the Baggies’ 2-1 win at Stoke, can play in a variety of roles on the left side.

He is the second Barnsley player to join the Baggies this summer after striker Devante Cole

Of the eight signings now made by Baggies boss Carlos Corberan since the window reopened, only Torbjorn Heggem has so far started a league game.

But both Styles and fellow midfielder Uros Racic, signed earlier in the week, will be in contention for next Saturday’s home game with Swansea City as the Baggies bid to maintain their unbeaten start to the Championship season.

Bury-born Styles began with his home town club before joining Barnsley in 2018, where he has scored 13 goals in 151 appearances for the club, during which he spent the 2022-23 season out on loan at another Championship side Millwall.

Having qualified through one of his grandparents, Styles made his international football for Hungary in February 2022 – and played in the Hungarians’ two National League wins over England in June 2022, the second of which was a 4-0 victory at Molineux.
