Matija Sarkic has received further bad injury news, with confirmation that he will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper showed hints of his promise during a half-season loan at Stoke City, albeit his season was cut short by a quad injury suffered in his seventh game. He was anticipated to return on a permanent basis in the summer, but at the last minute, Stoke decided to sign Mark Travers on loan from Bournemouth.
Sarkic instead joined Gary Rowett’s Millwall, where he has impressed in the first few weeks of the season, including an influential turn in a 1-0 win over Stoke. However, he had to play through pain in a 1-1 draw with another Birmingham old club, , and he has been missing since that game on September 2.
Following a 3-0 loss to Leeds on Sunday, Rowett stated that Sarkic will be out “for a while,” which Southwark News has now verified to be roughly three months.
“We’ve had quite a lot of disruption to the team. We’ll be without Mati Sarkic for a while, so again that’s a blow for us,” said Rowett at the weekend.
Millwall have picked up seven points from their opening six games and are next in action at home against Rotherham United tomorrow, with Bart Bialkowski standing in for Sarkic.
Travers had to withdraw from Republic of Ireland duty last week as a precaution, but he has been cleared to play for Stoke versus Norwich on Saturday. The Potters are now prepared to face Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night.
