Throughout the summer transfer window, Carlos Corberan was open about his desire to strengthen his right-back options at West Brom, with many defenders linked with a move to The Hawthorns.
Despite supposedly having an interest in Reggie Cannon, Carlos Corberan chose to bring Pipa into his team on a season-long loan from Ludogretes, having worked with the Spanish defender during his time at Huddersfield Town.
The USA international, who has 28 caps, was apparently of interest to the Baggies as a free agent after being released from his contract with Boavista due to a salary disagreement [Daily Mail, 28 August].
However, that interest apparently never materialised into a formal offer for the 25-year-old, with Corberan opting to pursue Pipa [The Express and Star, 1 September], but it appears that Cannon will be playing in the Championship after all.
According to West London Sport, QPR are poised to clinch a deal to bring the USMT ace to Loftus Road, as Gareth Ainsworth, like Corberan, is anxious to enhance his options on the right flank.
Cannon is set to begin training with the London club on Thursday, which means he will most likely be available for QPR’s trip to Birmingham City on Friday (22 September), another team who were linked with Cannon this summer.
The Baggies will be looking to compete at the opposite end of the table to QPR, who appear certain to be relegated again this season, but if Cannon hits the ground running, Corberan may be left wondering if he made the correct transfer decision this summer.
Pipa is yet to make his Albion debut, having failed to make the bench for West Brom’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City, but he might play his first minutes when the Baggies meet Watford at Vicarage Road on Wednesday (20 September).
Assuming he finds his feet fast under Corberan again this season, few supporters would argue that Albion should have signed Cannon instead; however, if the Spanish defender suffers, some at The Hawthorns may criticise the Baggies’ recruiting choice.
