This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers entirely renovated their quarterback room, letting Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph sign with other clubs while trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Steelers acquired former Denver Broncos signal-caller Russell Wilson in their stead, and they then traded their previous first-round pick, Justin Fields, to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick. Pittsburgh has now brought on a third quarterback.

According to ESPN, Steelers general manager Omar Khan informed reporters on Monday that the team and quarterback Kyle Allen had reached an agreement. After Trubisky signed with the Bills and Allen agreed to terms with Pittsburgh, it appears that Buffalo and Pittsburgh have switched backup quarterbacks. Allen played for the Buffalo Bills in 2023.

In 2018, Allen left Houston undrafted and made his NFL debut with the Carolina Panthers. Over the course of his first two NFL seasons, he started 13 games for the Panthers, finishing 6-7 and throwing for 3,588 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in 15 total games.

Reunited with head coach Ron Rivera, Allen was dealt in 2020 for a fifth-round pick to the Washington Football Team. Before sustaining an ankle injury that ended his season, Allen started just four games for Washington and finished 1-3. Allen joined the Houston Texans in 2022. In the two games he started, he lost.

All told, Allen has participated in thirty NFL games, starting nineteen of them (7-12 record), throwing for 4,734 yards, 26 touchdowns, and twenty-one interceptions. Though the Steelers’ QB depth chart is genuinely unclear, Allen is thought to be the team’s third quarterback. Wilson is in “pole position,” according to head coach Mike Tomlin, but it’s safe to assume he will have to prove it when this revamped squad hits the practice pitch.
