Looking at the Dallas Cowboys roster, it’s impossible to imagine the 2024 season being any better than the previous three. Most people expect it to be worse.
But, unlike others outside of The Star, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy did not appear concerned about the Cowboys’ lack of movement during the first three weeks of NFL free agency.
“It’s always a year-to-year approach,” McCarthy stated during the NFL owners’ meetings last week. “I believe that the design of your roster will always include some variation. But, theoretically, I believe you must draft and develop. If you look at my career as a head coach, you’ll notice that I’m quite comfortable and have a lot of expertise in this area. The current roster of players will have the most impact on our football club.
“We have a draft class coming in. We will continue to participate in free agency. However, the reality of our business is economic. As your players mature and their value increases, the way you keep them together changes. …
If you’re progressing and your players’ value is rising, the economics of your football team will never be the same from year to year. I understand what the figures suggest, but in my experience, you have to genuinely evolve from within.
