The Detroit Lions were unlikely to match the contract terms given by the Denver Broncos.
Despite being a player the organisation wanted to re-sign, it did not appear that the front office presented a realistic contract offer that the veteran wideout would take.
According to the Detroit Free Press, “They made a below-market contract offer at the start of free agency and have maintained minimal contact with Reynolds’ camp in recent weeks.”
Reynolds was hailed throughout the 2023 season for his ability to lengthen the chains, make big catches, and serve as a consistent target for experienced quarterback Jared Goff.
“We’re still in contact with J-Rey,” said Dan Campbell to reporters this week. “I don’t think it is a secret what we think of him in terms of the type of player he is. The selflessness, the tough job, and the versatility. So, just because I adore J-Rey does not mean that nothing will be accomplished.
Goff and Reynolds had grown close over their time playing together with the Los Angeles Rams.
The 29-year-old is getting a two-year contract for up to $14 million with the Broncos after participating in 37 games for Detroit since being claimed off waivers in November 2021.
Despite the fact that Reynolds was a free agent and the team had been unable to reach an agreement on terms since the start of free agency, general manager Brad Holmes stated at the annual league meeting that the organisation still wanted to re-sign him.
“He was part of the original idea. “We’re still having conversations; we’ll see where that leads,” Holmes added. “But that’s really the only one that’s still out there who was in the original plans.”
