The Detroit Lions have numerous excellent players in place as they aim for a Super Bowl run in 2024.
During the early part of the offseason, the Lions spent a substantial amount of money to improve their defence. They’ve added two cornerbacks, Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson.
Following last year’s troubles at the cornerback position, general manager Brad Holmes has wasted little time in strengthening the position’s depth. However, a wrench was thrown into the team’s plans when Cam Sutton was discharged due to an ongoing legal matter.
The organisation could benefit from adding another component to the position. Marshon Lattimore is one option, since the Lions’ coaching staff is familiar with him from their time in New Orleans.
Lattimore was drafted by the Saints in 2017 and began his career with Sean Payton’s coaching staff, which included Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn. He began with a bang, intercepting five passes on his way to capturing NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
In the years afterward, Lattimore has become as a standout cornerback. He has 15 career interceptions across several seasons.
Last season, he earned a 69.1 Pro Football Focus coverage grade and a 67.4 total defensive grade.
Lattimore has a large contract, but the base salary has been reduced due to restructures as the Saints strive to get out of their salary cap dilemma. Still, the Lions have enough cap space to make a deal.
With Davis and Robertson in the picture, the Lions have two good cornerbacks. They still lack a genuine shutdown presence, which Lattimore provides when healthy.
