Boston has won 78 games in each of the last two seasons, and if it does not drastically improve its starting rotation this summer, it will likely be in the same position in 2024.
The Red Sox were one of a few teams that strongly targeted former Orix Buffaloes pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but the Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed the star in a big deal.
The Red Sox must now start over from scratch. There have been rumours that the club is interested in former New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers pitcher Jordan Montgomery, but he could be “too expensive” for Boston, according to Sean McAdam of MassLive.com.
“Lately, with little public acknowledgment, there’s been a change in philosophy at Fenway: every once in a while (Rafael Devers, Trevor Story), the Red Sox will green-light a big signing,” McAdam told the Boston Globe. “However, those are rare. And it doesn’t look like that will change very soon.
“After the (Yoshinobu Yamamoto) announcement, one industry official speculated on how the Red Sox may pivot to obtain the requisite starting pitching. When I mentioned free agent Jordan Montgomery as a backup option, the official sneered, saying Montgomery would be too pricey for the Red Sox’s present budget.
Montgomery has been connected to the Red Sox on several occasions and appears to be an ideal fit, but it now appears that he may not be in the club’s plans.
There have been numerous rumours, but there is no way to say for sure. However, if he is too expensive for the Red Sox, it might be a bad sign for the team for the foreseeable future.
