The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team just won’t give up. Despite behind late for the second straight game against the College of Charleston Cougars, the “Cardiac Corn” rallied to win by one run on Saturday night.
The Huskers trailed 4-1 entering the eighth inning, but scored two runs in that frame before adding two more in the top of the ninth. Then rookie relievers Ty Horn and Casey Daiss were able to get out of jams they had caused for themselves and close the door.
The Huskers have rallied in more than just two games against CoC this season. They also used comebacks to win three of four games last weekend against Grand Canyon University. This time, they are hoping for a sweep on Sunday afternoon.
While the College of Charleston must be surprised that the Cardiac Corn rallied twice, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ head coach is also surprised by his team’s never-say-die spirit early in the season.
“It happens maybe once or twice a year that you come back from a ninth-inning deficit,” coach Will Bolt remarked on his post-game radio program. “And now we’ve done it a couple times.”
While the baseball team is now 6-3 and winning big almost every game, the Huskers’ softball team is struggling after losing its best player in the first game of the season and suffering a couple additional injuries. On Saturday, they dropped a double header, first against Wichita State 17-4 and then to #14 Missouri 10-6. They are now 0-3 at home this season and 8-9 overall.
