Despite having rejected three previous bids from Arsenal for midfielder Douglas Luiz, Aston Villa are apparently prepared for another.
The 25-year-old Brazilian midfielder, who joined Villa from Manchester City in 2019, has established himself as a crucial role at Villa Park, having appeared in over 150 Premier League games and earned international prominence.
Arsenal’s interest in Luiz dates back to the summer of 2022, when they failed to sign him despite repeated offers. However, according to a report in the Mirror, the Gunners are reigniting their pursuit of the player as they look to strengthen their midfield.
Arsenal appeared to have switched their focus elsewhere with the arrivals of Jorginho and Declan Rice, but they are now allegedly back in the running for Luiz’s signature. Villa, who are attracting interest in several of their players ahead of the summer transfer window, may be forced to sell in order to fund their own acquisitions, especially with a Champions League spot still in reach.
Apart from Luiz, other Villa players, such as Jacob Ramsey and Boubacar Kamara, have sparked interest from rival teams. However, Kamara’s season-ending injury may temper potential suitors’ enthusiasm for a summer move.
Despite gaining large income from player sales in previous transfer windows, Villa have also made big investments, including signing winger Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres. The team stays active in the market, having recently signed Morgan Rogers during the winter transfer window.
Arsenal manager Arteta previously mentioned time constraints as a reason for their failed pursuit of Luiz in 2022. However, with increased interest, Arsenal hopes to sign the midfielder this time around.
According to rumors in Spain, Barcelona’s sports director Deco is also following the situation and may make a move if the price is right.
