Andy Welsh, a former Sunderland, Leicester City, and Blackpool player, has stepped down as manager of Bury FC.
Between 2004 and 2007, the Manchester-born former midfielder appeared in 25 games for Sunderland, including two loan spells with Leicester.
Welsh left the Stadium of Light for Toronto before going on to play for Blackpool, Carlisle United, and Scunthorpe United, among others. Welsh, 40, has been Bury’s manager since 2020 but has now been removed of his responsibilities.
“We would like to thank Andy for his hard work and commitment to the club, the players, and its volunteers over the past three and a half years,” Bury’s website said in a statement.
“Andy provided exceptional leadership during some difficult and turbulent times, not least during a global pandemic when even playing football was difficult.” Andy not only won the league title, but he also quietly assisted and supported numerous volunteers off the pitch when they needed it.
“At the start of the season, he more than earned the right to lead the team at Gigg Lane.” We can’t say enough good things about him as a person, and we know many people will be sad to see him depart.
“Unfortunately, we have decided that now is the time for a change, and we wish Andy the best of luck in the future.”
“The under-23s management team of Leon Mike and Stephen Sheil will take charge on an interim basis, with the search for a new manager beginning immediately.”
