Henderson, Nevada: Antonio Pierce is looking to two seasoned former head coaches for guidance as he gets ready for his debut season as the full-time coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Former Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is the senior offensive assistant, while former Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is the assistant head coach, according to the Raiders’ announcement on Friday.
In his seven seasons as head coach, Lewis went 131-122-3 from 2003 to the 2018 postseason. Midway through the previous season, when Pierce took over as temporary coach, he was an important advisor.
From 2012 to 2015, Philbin led the Dolphins to a 24-28 record. In 2018, he served as the Green Bay Packers’ interim coach, going 2-2. Although he spent the majority of his NFL career coaching offensive line for Mike McCarthy in Green Bay and with the Dallas Cowboys, he was an offensive analyst at Ohio State the previous season. From 2007 to 2011, Philbin served as the offensive coordinator for the Packers.
Notably, Scott Turner was kept on as the coordinator of the pass game. He was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders for three seasons prior to joining the Raiders in the previous season.
Although Las Vegas placed ninth in terms of opponents allowed to score, Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator, is in his third season. Nevertheless, there have been some notable adjustments made on that side of the ball.
Rob Ryan, the senior defensive assistant, Rob Leonard, the defensive line coach, and Matt Feeney, the assistant defensive backs coach, were kept on as coaches.
