After a crazy coaching carousel during Kalen DeBoer’s tenure as the new head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Tennessee Volunteers emerged victorious.
When DeBoer started his tenure, one of the most significant announcements was that he would also be bringing Ryan Grubb, the former offensive coordinator for Washington, to Tuscaloosa.
Grubb assisted Michael Penix Jr.’s development last year. He was the mastermind behind the second-best passing offense in college football, only surpassed by Oregon, with an average of 347.7 passing yards per game and 38 passing touchdowns by the end of the season.
However, Grubb ultimately returned to the West Coast and accepted the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator post when Mike Macdonald took over as head coach, following his commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
After Grubb returned to Seattle, DeBoer was forced to rely on tight ends coach Nick Sheridan as his offensive coordinator.
Pete Thamel, a senior writer for ESPN, reports that Chris Kapilovic, the offensive line coach from Baylor, will be hired by the Alabama Crimson Tide football team on Monday. Although Kapilovic was recruited by Baylor in December, it is now anticipated that he will work with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa following Scott Huff’s trade to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Tennessee Volunteers were patiently waiting to strike while all of these changes were happening.
Kalen DeBoer brought in South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack to help with defense.
The new defensive coordinator began his coaching career at Tennessee-Martin, Jacksonville State, and Ole Miss after playing at Arkansas and Southern Miss.
Before going back to becoming the head coach in 2021, he was the DC and coach of the USA’s linebackers in 2016 and 2017. He is now staying in the state to fill the vacuum left by Kevin Steele’s retirement.
