After the Arizona Cardinals’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, they are now 1-7, but Kyler Murray isn’t going anywhere before Tuesday’s deadline.
The Cardinals intend to keep their franchise quarterback in the lineup this season, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Murray’s recovery from an ACL tear prevented him from playing against the Ravens on Sunday, even though he participated fully in practice the previous week.
Murray was given the all-clear, but Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon informed reporters that Joshua Dobbs will start against the Cleveland Browns in Week 9. This season, Dobbs has started Arizona’s first eight games while Murray has been on the injured reserve.
Murray should stay out of the game for one more week since the Browns have one of the league’s greatest pass rushers in Myles Garrett, who is perhaps the best in the league.
That being said, Gannon’s first year as an NFL head coach presents a certain amount of urgency to begin turning things around. Although a weak 2023 campaign was always anticipated in Arizona, the Cardinals now own the poorest record in the NFL as a result of their current five-game losing streak.
That might make it possible for the team to give up completely in the hopes of signing Caleb Williams, the likely top choice. Murray’s time in Arizona would eventually come to an end under a tanking scheme, but before making a trade, opposing teams probably want to see him play and be healthy.
Before the 2022 season, Murray inked a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension with the Cardinals, although the agreement hasn’t even officially started yet. Although trading Murray would allow the organisation to avoid the worst of that contract, other teams might be reluctant to take on its obligations until Murray shows he is capable of playing at a high level.
