The Eagles have chosen to proceed with Nick Sirianni as head coach, but there are still lingering rumours about a possible relationship between Bill Belichick and the franchise. As the Senior Bowl draws near, there is still a lot of conjecture connecting the Eagles to the iconic Patriots coach after a poor first-round playoff exit and many coordinator changes.
During an appearance on “Felger & Mazz” on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal highlighted the ongoing chatter and revealed that the Eagles had expressed interest in Belichick in the event that things with Sirianni didn’t work out. He said: “The Eagles were very interested in Belichick if things didn’t work out with Nick Sirianni, and they could be at the front of the queue if things again go poorly for him next year.”
When it was brought out that Sirianni’s performance in the most recent playoff defeat to Tampa Bay did not meet expectations, Bedard compared it to the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of former Eagles coach Doug Pederson.
“DOUG Pederson was sacked because he refused to comply with their requests to fire specific individuals and complete tasks. They opted to keep Nick Sirianni for an additional year because it seemed that he was agreeable to all of that.”
Following a recent coaching change, the Eagles appointed Kellan Moore as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, replacing the fired Brian Johnson and Sean Desai. Bedard went so far as to speculate that before Belichick left the Patriots, the Eagles might have been among the clubs contacting him.
Belichick was eventually passed up for the head coaching position with the Falcons, despite prior connections to the team. Currently, there is conjecture regarding Belichick’s possible move from coaching to broadcasting in 2024 after his hiatus.
NFL front offices are undoubtedly paying attention to the lingering rumours and possible moves involving Belichick as they wait to see what the highly respected coach’s future holds.
