According to Phil Hay, Rangers considered recruiting Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton during the summer.

The Gers were interested in the 23-year-old, according to an Atheltic writer on Thursday (14 September), but a deal never materialised.

Throughout the transfer window, the Light Blues were connected with a number of players as Michael Beale attempted to overhaul his side at Ibrox.

Versatile

Rangers may have benefited from a deal for Shackleton since he can play as a defensive midfielder or in either of the fullback positions.

That type of adaptability would have given Beale with some much-needed cover in a couple of places where they look to be lacking in the centre of the park, and another defensive option would have been well appreciated.

Hay said that new Leeds manager Daniel Farke was keen to move the Englishman, who spent last season on loan at Millwall.

However, he has already pushed his way into the German’s plans, having appeared in six games this season and starting five of them.

With midfielder Glen Kamara moving from the Gers to Elland Road, a transfer for Shackleton may have been part of the deal, but the club plainly passed up that opportunity.

In other Rangers news, Chris Jack has revealed which position is “crying out” for a new signing.
