This season, the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) will sport a QR code on their uniform thanks to a sponsorship deal with the software company Spokenote.
QR codes are machine-readable code blocks that are scanned by a scanner or smartphone camera. They encode data, usually a URL, using an array of black and white squares.
The Pacers hope to increase engagement with the promise of exclusive material by including a QR code on their uniform, a first for a North American sports team.
Pacers Sports & Entertainment President and Chief Commercial Officer Todd Taylor remarked, “We are thrilled to have Spokenote as our jersey patch partner. Their innovative product will allow us to engage our fans in many new and different ways.” “We are incredibly proud to be helping a local startup become a well-known consumer brand.”
Through this activation, Spokenote seeks to raise awareness of their “codeplus” technology, which enables people and businesses to affix words or movies to tangible objects along with a personalised landing page.
“Spokenote is excited to be a new jersey patch partner of the Pacers, one of the hottest and most exciting young teams in basketball. We look forward to working with them to find new ways to engage fans at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and beyond,” stated Spokenote CEO John Wechsler.
However, Watford of the English Football League (EFL) is not the only team in the world to have put a QR code on a sports uniform; the English team did experiments along these lines as early as 2012.
