Three players have already signed with Auburn through the transfer portal: former Duke linebacker Dorian Mausi, former Georgia State wide receiver Robert Lewis, and former Kansas defensive lineman Gauge Keys. It hasn’t been as exciting as some fans had hoped for 2023, but that’s understandable given Auburn’s restricted roster places and the staff’s limited ability to fill a small number of those spots.
Hugh Freeze and his team will now devote more of their time to the transfer site after focusing much of their
emphasis in December on wrapping up the 2024 high school recruiting class, which ended up being the seventh best class in the nation. Players have until January 3 to access the portal, and teams can bring transfer visitors to campus before the spring semester begins during the visit window that weekend. Names are still trickling in.
Considering Auburn’s present roster, it seems likely that the coaching staff will want to add one or two players to the secondary, an offensive tackle, another defensive lineman, and an interior offensive lineman. It’s also possible that another wide receiver will be added. There are a few names that are well-known Auburn targets, and others will undoubtedly surface.
Auburn will have 15 fewer scholarship players available against Maryland than it did in the regular-season finale versus Alabama due to opt-outs and departing transfers.
The starting defensive tackle Marcus Harris and starting cornerbacks D.J. James and Nehemiah Pritchett have opted out of the team to enter the NFL draft, meaning they will not participate in Saturday’s Music City Bowl versus Maryland (1 p.m. CST, ABC). These three opt-outs have primarily affected the Tigers on defence. Hugh Freeze’s team hasn’t suffered greatly as a result of the portal thus far, although Ja’Varrius Johnson, Auburn’s top receiver, has transferred out, leaving the Tigers with just seven scholarship receivers for the contest.
On National Signing Day, Auburn signed eighteen high school and JUCO athletes. The class is presently ranked eighth in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings. Three candidates are still available for early signing: 3-star offensive tackle Favour Edwin, 5-star defensive lineman LJ McCray, who is considering Auburn, and Top247 interior offensive lineman Coen Echols, who is sticking with Florida or Florida State. Ryan Williams, a five-star wide receiver, is still a flip target for the February signing window.
