According to Major League Baseball’s report on Monday, the Houston Astros had five players that earned pre-arbitration bonuses for their 2023 season based on their performance.
JP France, Bryan Abreu, Yainer Diaz, Jeremy Peña, and Chas McCormick were those players. Their bonuses were all determined by a WAR formula.
McCormick was awarded the largest bonus of $453,601. McCormick took a batting position.273, setting career highs for the third-year player with 22 home runs and 70 RBI.
After batting in the MLB for a second season, Peña was paid $362,362.One season after taking fifth in the Rookie of the Year voting and winning a Gold Glove, he finished with 263 with 10 home runs and 52 RBI.
Diaz batted in his rookie season and received a $333,108 bonus.282 in 104 games with 23 home homers and 60 RBI. In the end, he received the fifth-place vote for American League Rookie of the Year. In 2024, he will be the starting catcher for the Astros.
Reliever Abreu finished 3-2 with a 1.75 ERA in 72 games with 100 strikeouts in 72 innings, earning a $304,107 bonus.
The rookie France went 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA in 24 games (23 starts), striking out 101 and walking 47 in order to earn a $275,335 bonus.
101 players who did not have the required two years and 228 days of service time for wage arbitration in 2022 received payments from a $50 million pool.
For winning at least one prize each season, players are eligible for bonus money; the remaining funds are distributed using a WAR method.
A winner of an MVP or Cy Young Award will receive $2.5 million; second place in the voting will earn $1.75 million; third place will earn $1.5 million; fourth place, fifth place, or selection to the all-MLB first team will receive $1 million; Rookie of the Year will receive $750,000; and second place in the voting for Rookie of the Year or the all-MLB second team will receive $500,000.
