MK Dons have signed a short-term custodian…

MK Dons have finalised the free transfer of custodian Michael Kelly.

Kelly, 27, joins the Football Club on a short-term contract after leaving Carlisle United in June and is available to play against Notts County this afternoon at Stadium MK.

The custodian has spent the bulk of his career in the Republic of Ireland, where he has played for Shamrock Rovers, Cabinteely, Longford Town, Bohemian and Bray Wanderers.

Kelly moved across the Irish Sea to Carlisle United in July 2022, and he was part of the Cumbrians’ promotion from Sky Bet League Two last season.

“It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours, but I’m delighted to be here,” Kelly said to mkdons.com.

“As soon as I heard MK Dons were interested, I jumped at the chance.” The boys have been flying this season, and maybe I can add to the group and help us get going.

“I like to think of myself as an imposing custodian, and I like to take advantage of my size and frame.” I’m also a skilled custodian with the ball at my feet, so I’ll do everything I can to assist the team advance.”

Kelly began his senior football career with Shamrock Rovers, making his debut against Finn Harps in the League of Ireland First Division in March 2014. He played for Shamrock for two years before moving on to Cabinteely, where he had 12 clean sheets in 55 games over two seasons.

Kelly joined Longford Town in 2018 and played 39 times for the club before joining Premier Division side Bohemian the following season. After one season with Bohs, the goalie returned to Cabinteely, where he appeared in 61 games.

Kelly agreed to terms with another of his previous clubs in 2021, completing a comeback to Longford Town. After playing 10 more games for the County Longford team, he moved to Bray Wanderers in the First Division, where he played eight games.

Kelly left Ireland for the first time in July 2022 to join Carlisle United. Last season, he was a member of the Cumbrians side that achieved promotion to Sky Bet League Two via the play-offs.
